A very decent movie with a nice concept but marred mainly by one annoying fact: Time and time again one of these people had an opportunity to shoot the threat and did not do it. She's got the hots for Kato who doesn't notice or care cause he's too busy grimacing and thinking about other people. The girl is a real cute "girly girl" who panics and runs away a lot. Kato is intense and shudders and grimaces a lot (killed his father and went to juvie). Kel is at first timid, and even cowardly but later sees himself as heroic. The 2 guys, Kel and Kato, have a history but hadn't seen each other in a while. At the center of all this are 3 young people: 2 guys and a girl. Regardless of the manga, if you've read it or what you think of it, Gantz is a fantastic stand alone anime.and I think I'd prefer THAT to a seemingly endless story.Thru their deaths by misfortune, various people are periodically recruited by a machine in the form of a dark sphere called "Gantz"(I'm guessing it's completely random since an old lady and a kid were also conscripted). In conclusion, it's an anime with a great concept, great characters to explore it, great animation, a ton of violence, plenty of nudity, a decent amount of action and some good social commentary. Yes, there are some things that aren't fully explained.but the end result, what happens to our hero(and/or heroes) is quite clear. I don't see why, if you just pay attention a little bit to the visuals and how the fundamentals of the whole thing 's quite clear. Some say they hate the ending, or that it is confusing. The characters also come across plenty of moral dilemmas and have plenty of discussions about the nature of society. Good guy heroes often come off as cowardly, douchebags save the day, etc etc. Speaking of the characters, they are very dynamic and what makes this show last. Moments of character empowerment are shot down in the flash, people who seem like throwaway characters come back later, and none of the characters are safe from harm. It does an excellent job of going against the typical story clichés. It has the surface level 'low brow' entertainment like extreme amounts of violence and a pretty hefty amount of nudity. It has an extremely interesting and rather unique concept that is thoroughly explored and discussed through the characters. This is one of the best all around anime I've ever seen. I don't like to use the word 'masterpiece'.but it wouldn't be an insane adjective to use to describe Gantz.
